The J&K Police have slapped the Public Safety Act (PSA) on Kashmiri Journalist Fahad Shah and arrested him a day before his bail application was scheduled to come up for hearing. Previously, the police had re-arrested the journalist, even though the court had granted him bail on two occasions.
Khurram Parvez has worked extensively to document serious human rights violations, including enforced disappearances and unlawful killings, in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. In his search for accountability, Parvez has been the victim of a number of incidents of reprisals reportedly for sharing this information with the United Nations, as documented in various reports of the Secretary-General and communications from UN special procedures mandate holders.
Parvez is a leading member of the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society, a group that has frequently published reports on human rights abuses in the region, including disappearances, torture and mass graves. Kashmir, disputed between India and Pakistan, remains one of the world’s most heavily militarized areas, with hundreds of thousands of troops on the Indian side of the valley alone.
As it turns out, most of those arrested were not even at the event, and the charges about the assassination plot seem to have been entirely fabricated.
